Expressive and Receptive Skills Development

One’s expressive skills (i.e., ability to cue) and receptive skills (i.e., ability to cue read others) do not necessarily develop at the same rate. The CAECS-R serves to assess one’s ability to cue read single words.

Consider Training

People who are deaf/hard-of-hearing and were raised with cued English as their first language acquired the ability to cue read passively. If you learned to cue in a course, you might need training in order to cue read especially if you do not rely on cue reading for day-to-day communication.

Know Yourself and the Assessment

Before the test, you may want to perform some self-assessment to estimate your level of cue reading fluency. Are you able to cue read reliably at the word, sentence, or conversational level? The CAECS-R will require you to cue read model cueing at the single word level.

The Cued American English Competency Screening-R (CAECS-R ©2002, TECUnit) provides a framework for assessing cue reading skills at the single word level. The CAECS–R may be taken by any individual who wishes to assess his/her basic cue reading skills. In some states, the CAECS-R serves as a prerequisite test for State Level Assessments (also sometimes called a Quality Assurance Screening). A passing score on the CAECS-R is one of the prerequisites to register for the CLT National Certification Examination (CLTNCE). It should be noted that the CAECS-R assesses basic cue reading and does not inform one’s readiness for the voicing sections of the CLTNCE.
